UGC to consider appeals

University qualified students who have failed to apply for University Admission due to the flood situation could send a letter of appeal to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for consideration, UGC Chairman Prof SVDG Samaranayake told the Daily News.
He said that the closing date of applications for university admission for the academic year 2010/ 2011 was not postponed. Accordingly yesterday was the closing date to send duly filled applications for University admission.
"We have always considered the difficulties encountered by students in sending us filled applications. For example, during the days of the war against terrorism in the North, we distributed a University Admission Handbook to students who were in camps.
However if the closing date was postponed then the commencing of universities might also get delayed. Therefore we have decided not to postpone it" he explained.
He also said that the UGC has received about 40,000 applications so far. He expected that this would reach 50,000 by tomorrow morning. About 20,000 applications were received yesterday alone, he added.
"If any student has been unable to send an application through registered post, or if the letter was displaced or if the post office of the area is inundated due to floods, he or she can send us an appeal conveying the difficulty faced" he said.
